The MTV Video Music Awards have always been known for flamboyant, unusual outings – but this time the stars behaved rather modestly.
After Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony returned to the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. There were quite a few celebrities parading down the red carpet this time around. But not as dramatic a look as Lady Gaga donned in a meat dress or Lil Kim covered her breasts with purple foil. The stars were modest – and even a well known modesty like Taylor Swift was a provocateur. On this night she appeared in public in a nude Oscar de la Renta dress, seemingly woven of silver chains. The singer Anitta also appeared completely nude: a corset in a Schiaparelli Couture corset hid one of her breasts and the other was concealed by the scarlet ornate construction. The motto “don’t be shy” was echoed by Maneskin and her favourite Gucci brand once again – the lead singer Damiano David appeared on stage with a bare bum. Lily Reinhart also wore a lace dress to the MTV awards – she chose Fendi.
The singer Lizzo covered herself to the max, sinking into a voluminous Jean Paul Gaultier Couture dress. Lil Nas X also showed off his Harris Reed look, which was quirky and fluffy. What the evening lacked was a splash of colour – so singer Khalid was to be thanked for the splash of pink, yellow and purple in his Versace look. As well as Sabrina Carpenter and her bright Moschino floral field.
