Singer Dua Lipa has joined the cast of Greta Gerwig’s new film Barbie. The news came to light after posters of the upcoming film’s characters were published on social media. One of them depicts the famous British performer in the image of Barbie doll with long bright blue hair, make-up to match and pearl jewellery.
A series of posters introduced other characters from the film as well. It confirmed moviegoers’ speculation that several actresses will appear as the iconic Mattel brand dolls in the film. Barbie President will be Issa Rae, Barbie Diplomat will be Nicola Kohlan, Barbie Journalist will be Ritu Arya, Barbie Writer will be Alexandra Shipp, Barbie Lawyer will be Sharon Rooney, Barbie Judge will be Ana Cruz Kine, Barbie Physics is Emma Maki and Barbie Doctor will be Hari Nef.
Also playing the roles of Barbie will be Margot Robbie and Kate McKinnon. Their Kens companions will turn out to be Liu Simu, Ryan Gosling, Shuti Gatwa, Scott Evans and Kingsley Ben-Adir. The rest of the actors will apparently play people rather than puppets. The cast of the film will include Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, America Ferrera, Jamie Demetriou, Connor Swindells, Will Ferrell and Emerald Fennell. Oscar winner Helen Mirren will act as narrator.
Gerwig co-wrote the screenplay with her lover Noah Baumbach. The film is being produced by Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Robbie Brenner, David Heyman, Josie McNamara and Inon Kreutz. Warner Bros., LuckyChap Entertainment and Mattel Films are developing the project. Gosling and Robbie have previously said that the film’s plot will come as a complete surprise to viewers.
