Antonio Banderas will star alongside Nicolas Cage in the fifth season of True Detective, giving HBO’s crime anthology a new leading partnership as it prepares to begin production in 2027.

The next chapter will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York, with Issa López returning as showrunner, writer and director after overseeing True Detective: Night Country.

For a series built around distinctive settings and high-profile casts, the announcement establishes two central elements of its next incarnation: a new location and two actors with extensive, markedly different screen careers.

Banderas and Cage take the lead

Banderas will play Rai García, while Cage takes on the role of Henry Logan.

Further character details remain limited, leaving the relationship between the two figures and their place within the story largely under wraps.

Both actors will also serve as executive producers, joining a team that includes López, writer Daniel Zelman and series creator Nic Pizzolatto.

Their casting continues the anthology’s tradition of placing established film actors at the centre of its standalone seasons.

Issa López moves the story from Alaska to New York

López’s return follows the fourth season, Night Country, which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis and unfolded in Alaska.

Season five moves to Jamaica Bay, giving the filmmaker a different geographical setting for the next story.

Alongside López and Zelman, the executive-producing team includes Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.

The new season therefore combines a fresh cast and location with several of the creative figures connected to the franchise.

Another major television role for Nicolas Cage

True Detective will mark Cage’s second leading television role, following the dark superhero series Spider-Noir.

His film career spans projects including Leaving Las Vegas, National Treasure, Pig and Dream Scenario. The HBO series adds another substantial television commitment to a career long associated with cinema.

Banderas, meanwhile, arrives following roles in the Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony and the Nicole Kidman-led Babygirl.

His credits range from The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro to voicing Puss in Boots in the Shrek franchise, bringing another broad screen history to the pairing.

Following the success of ‘Night Country’

The fifth season follows the anthology’s strongest audience performance to date.

HBO reported 12.7 million cross-platform viewers for Night Country, making it the most-watched instalment of True Detective.

With López returning and Banderas joining Cage, the next chapter now has its leading cast in place. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the story moving from Alaska’s frozen landscape to Jamaica Bay.
