Quentin Tarantino has written a screenplay for his planned tenth and final feature film, but his next major project will unfold on a London stage.
The filmmaker is focusing on The Popinjay Cavalier, a comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen, before returning to the question of what comes next in his directing career. After the play, he wants time with his family and space to consider his next move.
For audiences waiting for his final film, the update confirms that a script exists. It also makes clear that Tarantino is giving himself time before taking it further.
A screenplay ready to revisit
Tarantino discussed the project during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, his first visit to the programme in more than a decade.
“I’ve written a script that I really like,” he said.
He explained that he wants to complete the theatrical project, reflect on the experience and spend time away from work before deciding how to proceed.
That leaves his long-standing plan to retire after ten features intact, while allowing another creative challenge to take priority. His comments centred on the order in which he wants to work, with the film waiting until he is ready to return to it.
Sacha Baron Cohen leads his West End project
The Popinjay Cavalier began as a screenplay before Tarantino recognised that the material suited the stage.
Described as a swashbuckling comedy, it will open at London’s Phoenix Theatre in March 2027, following previews in late February. The three-month engagement is scheduled to close on June 13.
Baron Cohen will lead the production, placing the actor at the centre of Tarantino’s next substantial storytelling project.
The move also gives the filmmaker an opportunity to explore material in a different form before committing to the feature intended to close his directing career.
His last feature remains ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’
Tarantino’s most recent directorial release is still 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie.
The film earned Pitt an Oscar for supporting actor and also won for production design. Tarantino received nominations for best picture and director, while DiCaprio was nominated for lead actor.
His next feature therefore carries the expectation of following that film as well as the significance of a planned farewell.
For now, however, Tarantino’s attention is on the Phoenix Theatre. The tenth screenplay is written; the decision about when to make it comes after the play, family time and a chance to reconsider what he wants from his final film.
