Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sánchez, pop star Katy Perry, TV host Gayle King, and three other trailblazing women are preparing to make history as Blue Origin’s first all-female astronaut crew – and they’re doing it in style. The six pioneers, featured on Elle magazine’s latest cover, revealed plans to bring high fashion to the final frontier during their upcoming spaceflight.
In a playful interview with Elle, the crew shared their unconventional pre-flight preparations. “Who wouldn’t want to look glamorous before launch?” joked Sánchez, who recently announced her engagement to the Amazon founder. Perry enthusiastically agreed: “Space is finally going glam.” The group even coordinated beauty treatments, with Sánchez revealing their pact to get eyelash extensions for the mission.
“These lashes are coming up in that capsule!” the media personality quipped. When King was asked how her falsies would handle zero gravity, the veteran journalist deadpanned: “Mine are glued on. They’re not going anywhere.”
The diverse crew includes former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Ciarán Flynn. Their mission marks the first completely female spaceflight since Valentina Tereshkova’s solo 1963 voyage. While Blue Origin hasn’t announced the launch date, the company confirmed this will be one of its next New Shepard missions.
The astronauts’ lighthearted approach belies the flight’s significance. By combining STEM expertise (Bowe helped develop orbital launch systems), social advocacy (Nguyen founded Rise to support sexual assault survivors), and star power, the mission aims to redefine who gets to experience space exploration.
As for their actual flight outfits? The team remains coy about whether couture will peek through their pressurized blue suits. But one thing’s certain: when this capsule touches down, the space tourism industry may never look the same.
