The legendary actor Robert De Niro will be honored with one of the most prestigious awards of his illustrious career—the Honorary Palme d’Or—at the upcoming 78th Cannes Film Festival, as reported by Variety. The 81-year-old Hollywood icon will attend the festival’s opening ceremony on May 13 and host a masterclass at the Théâtre Debussy the following day.
Expressing his gratitude, De Niro shared, “I have incredibly warm feelings toward the Cannes Film Festival—especially now, when so much in the world divides us. Cannes, on the contrary, brings people together: storytellers, filmmakers, fans, and friends. It’s like coming home.”
This is not De Niro’s first major involvement with the festival—he previously presided over the jury in 2011. This year, French actress Juliette Binoche will take on the role of jury president, marking the second consecutive year a woman has led the panel.
De Niro’s legendary filmography includes timeless classics such as Taxi Driver (1976), Goodfellas (1990), and Heat (1995), cementing his status as one of cinema’s greatest actors. The honorary award recognizes his decades of outstanding contributions to the art of filmmaking.
The Cannes Film Festival will run from May 13 to May 24, celebrating cinematic excellence from around the world.
