This week has been filled with significant events for the Danish royal family. After King Frederik and Queen Mary made their long-awaited return to the public eye at a grand concert celebrating their daughter Princess Isabella’s upcoming 18th birthday, they attended yet another important family gathering. On Wednesday, April 16, the Danish royals came together at their countryside residence, Fredensborg Palace, to mark Queen Margrethe’s 85th birthday.
Joining King Frederik and Queen Mary at the celebration were all four of their children: 19-year-old Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella—who will turn 18 on Monday, April 21—and 14-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
In honor of her milestone birthday, Queen Margrethe attended a special concert performed by the Royal Life Guards Orchestra in the Inner Palace at Fredensborg. Just hours before the official festivities began, the Danish royal palace released two new portraits of the queen, taken at Fredensborg Palace.
For the occasion, Margrethe wore an elegant high-necked purple dress, accessorized with a daisy-shaped diamond brooch and matching earrings. The brooch originally belonged to her mother, Queen Ingrid of Sweden, and was passed down to Margrethe, who is affectionately nicknamed “Daisy” within the family.
In January 2024, Queen Margrethe made headlines when she unexpectedly announced her abdication after 52 years on the throne, passing the crown to her son, then-Crown Prince Frederik. Throughout her reign, she earned widespread admiration both in Denmark and abroad, becoming a beloved and respected monarch.
The celebration of her 85th birthday was a touching tribute to her enduring legacy and the deep affection the Danish people hold for their former queen.
