Angelina Jolie has revealed the personal significance behind her latest film, “Couture,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. The 50-year-old actress plays a filmmaker who discovers she has breast cancer after receiving a major directing assignment—a role that resonated deeply with Jolie due to her own health history.
In 2013, Jolie underwent a preventive double mastectomy after genetic testing revealed she carried the BRCA1 gene, which significantly increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, passed away from ovarian cancer in 2007 after earlier battling breast cancer.
In an interview with Variety ahead of the premiere, Jolie shared that she wore her late mother’s necklace throughout the filming, which provided her with strength and confidence. She described the emotional nature of the project and the supportive atmosphere on set.
“I’ve always found that the hardest films often have the warmest sets,” Jolie reflected. “There’s something very comforting about having sincere conversations and sharing emotions with like-minded people. It was very healing in many ways because when you looked around at the crew, almost everyone had been touched by this diagnosis in some way. Everyone on set had lost someone they loved.”
“Couture” is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 3, 2025. The film is expected to bring heightened awareness to themes of resilience, family legacy, and personal strength in the face of illness.
