Matthew Rhys has made Emmy history, becoming the first performer ever to win two lead acting awards during the same ceremony.

The Welsh actor took home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for Netflix’s The Beast in Me and later won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay.

The extraordinary double victory also gave Rhys another major distinction: he is now the first male performer to win Emmys across all three main lead acting categories — drama, comedy and limited series.

Two major wins in one night

Rhys’ first victory came for his performance in the second season of The Beast in Me.

The category included a particularly strong group of nominees: Riz Ahmed for Bait, Jason Bateman for Black Rabbit, Charlie Hunnam for Monster: The Ed Gein Story and Oscar Isaac for Beef.

Rhys himself appeared genuinely surprised by the result.

During his acceptance speech, he thanked the writers behind the series, director Antonio Campos and his co-star Claire Danes, describing her as an intense and formidable scene partner.

But that win would soon become only half of his historic night.

Later in the ceremony, Rhys returned to the stage after winning the comedy prize for Widow’s Bay.

‘Widow’s Bay’ completes a historic double

In the comedy category, Rhys faced Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for Wonder Man, Steve Carell for Rooster, Jason Segel for Shrinking and Martin Short for Only Murders in the Building.

His victory meant that for the first time in the 78-year history of the Emmy Awards, one performer had won two lead acting categories on the same night.

Other actors have previously collected two acting Emmys during a single ceremony, but not both in leading categories.

James Earl Jones achieved a double win in 1991, taking Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Gabriel’s Fire and Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for Heat Wave.

Stockard Channing also won twice in 2002, but both victories came in supporting actress categories — for The West Wing and The Matthew Shepard Story.

Rhys therefore became the first performer to win at the top of two acting ballots in a single evening.

He now has the complete Emmy acting set

The night also completed an achievement that had never before been accomplished by a male actor.

Rhys previously won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2018 for his celebrated performance in The Americans.

With his new victories for The Beast in Me and Widow’s Bay, he has now won lead acting Emmys in drama, comedy and limited series.

Several major actors had previously come close.

Robert Young and Carroll O’Connor both won lead awards in drama and comedy, while Andre Braugher won in drama and limited series.

None completed all three.

Only Barbara Stanwyck had done something similar

Across Emmy history, only one performer had previously collected victories across all three major lead acting areas.

Barbara Stanwyck won in drama, comedy and limited-series categories between 1961 and 1983.

However, the history of the Emmy categories was structured differently during the earliest part of her career, with one of her wins predating the modern separation between comedy and drama.

Rhys’ achievement therefore stands apart within the contemporary Emmy system.

His The Beast in Me co-star Claire Danes is among the actresses who remain one category short of completing a similar set.

A career-defining Emmy night

Rhys’ latest victories add to an awards history that already includes widespread acclaim for The Americans.

He has now received eight Emmy nominations across his career, including three nominations for the FX spy drama and previous recognition for his performance as the title character in HBO’s Perry Mason.

This year, his presence at the Emmys extended beyond acting.

Rhys also received nominations as an executive producer on both of the series that brought him his historic acting victories.

‘The Beast in Me’ win was the bigger surprise

Of the two awards, Rhys’ limited-series victory was arguably the less expected.

Oscar Isaac had been viewed as a major contender for his work in Beef, while the category also included several acclaimed performances.

That made Rhys’ reaction onstage particularly memorable.

He openly described the victory as a shock before praising the writers and creative team responsible for the series.

His later comedy win then transformed what had already been a strong night into one of the most significant individual performances in Emmy history.

The 2026 Emmy Awards were led by The Pitt with 25 nominations, followed by Hacks, Widow’s Bay and Beef.

But one of the ceremony’s defining stories belonged to Rhys.

Winning either of his categories would have added another major award to an already respected career.
