Westeros is officially heading to the big screen. Warner Bros. has set a June 6, 2029 release date for Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, the first feature film set in the world created by George R.R. Martin.
The movie will explore the story of Aegon I Targaryen, the founder of the Targaryen dynasty and the ruler who conquered much of Westeros centuries before the events of the original Game of Thrones series.
Owen Harris will direct the film
The project will be directed by Owen Harris, who already has experience within the Game of Thrones universe.
Harris serves as an executive producer on HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and directed several episodes of its first season.
His previous television work also includes episodes of Black Mirror, the 2019 revival of The Twilight Zone and Brave New World.
The screenplay for Aegon’s Conquest is being written by Beau Willimon, best known as the creator and former showrunner of Netflix’s House of Cards.
Willimon also worked as a writer on Disney+ series Andor, adding another major franchise to his credits before entering the world of Westeros.
The story will focus on the first Targaryen king
Plot details remain limited, but the film is expected to follow Aegon I’s conquest of Westeros.
Aegon lived several centuries before Daenerys Targaryen and the events of Game of Thrones.
He became the first ruler to unite much of the Seven Kingdoms under a single crown and established the Targaryen dynasty that would dominate Westeros for generations.
His story has never previously been portrayed on screen, making Aegon’s Conquest a major expansion of HBO and Warner Bros.’ growing fantasy universe.
The actor who will play Aegon has not yet been announced.
The Targaryens remain at the centre of the franchise
The Targaryen family has already become one of the most important parts of the expanding Game of Thrones franchise.
HBO’s House of the Dragon explores an earlier period of Targaryen rule, while the original series followed Daenerys Targaryen’s attempt to reclaim the Iron Throne generations later.
Aegon’s Conquest will go even further back in the family’s history, telling the story of the man who established their rule in the first place.
George R.R. Martin detailed Aegon’s rise and the wider history of the dynasty in his book Fire & Blood.
‘Game of Thrones’ moves from television to cinema
The upcoming film marks an important new direction for the franchise.
The original Game of Thrones ran for eight seasons between 2011 and 2019, becoming one of HBO’s biggest international successes and winning numerous Emmy Awards.
Since then, the universe has continued primarily through television.
House of the Dragon expanded the franchise with the history of House Targaryen, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdomsintroduced another period of Westeros history through the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire Egg.
Aegon’s Conquest will now take the franchise into cinemas for the first time.
More ‘Game of Thrones’ is coming before 2029
Fans will not have to wait until 2029 for another return to Westeros.
House of the Dragon is continuing with a fourth season, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been renewed for a second season.
That means HBO’s television universe will continue developing while Warner Bros. prepares the franchise’s first theatrical release.
With the director and writer now confirmed and a release date officially set, the next major chapter of the Game of Thrones universe is beginning to take shape.
And for the first time, audiences will be able to experience Westeros not just on television — but on the big screen.
