Céline Dion has brought a memorable chapter of her fashion history back to the stage, wearing a custom Chanel gown inspired by her appearance at the 1997 Academy Awards.

The singer unveiled the silver and deep-blue design during her Paris residency on October 14, approaching the end of its first run of shows. Created by Matthieu Blazy, the gown reinterprets the Karl Lagerfeld look she wore nearly three decades ago, with elaborate embroidery and a newly sculpted silhouette.

For Dion, the connection is personal: an outfit associated with an important night in her career has become part of her return to live performance.

Matthieu Blazy reimagines a Chanel memory

The original gown came from Chanel’s spring 1997 couture collection, designed during Lagerfeld’s tenure at the house.

Blazy’s interpretation gives that reference a different shape. A sweetheart neckline, corseted bodice and pronounced hips create a more structured silhouette, while a dramatic slit introduces movement.

The result preserves the shimmer of the earlier look while giving Dion a new stage costume with its own identity.

Reflecting on the design on Instagram, the singer explained that she was wearing a fresh interpretation of the original dress.

“Wearing this version now, brings me right back,” she wrote.

More than 1,380 hours of craftsmanship

The gown required more than 1,380 hours of work, with 6,000 jewels and 5,000 beads incorporated into the design.

It was handmade at Chanel’s ateliers at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris, with specialist embroidery by Atelier Montex, one of the Maisons d’art based at le19M.

The construction combined embroidered muslin with a padded, corseted bustier. Raffia detailed the neckline, while glass crystal rhinestones, seed beads and glass beads created the richly embellished surface.

Those details give the dress its visual intensity, bringing the precision of couture craftsmanship into the scale of an arena performance.

A shooting-star necklace completes the connection

Dion’s jewellery also recalled her 1997 appearance.

She wore a new Chanel comète necklace crafted from platinum and 18-karat white gold, set with 1,080 diamonds totalling more than 67 carats.

Its shooting-star motif echoes the necklace she wore to the Oscars. The design also connects with Chanel’s jewellery history, referencing Gabrielle Chanel’s 1932 Bijoux de Diamants collection.

Together, the gown and necklace make the historical reference feel deliberate, extending it beyond the dress alone.

A fashion moment within a larger return

At the 1997 Oscars, Dion performed both “Because You Loved Me” and “I Finally Found Someone”, making that evening a significant musical memory as well as a fashion one.

Her Paris residency now carries a different significance. The shows mark her first major run of performances since she announced her stiff-person syndrome diagnosis in December 2022.

Her return to the stage began with the Paris Olympics opening ceremony in 2024, followed later that year by a performance at the 1001 Seasons of Elie Saab event in Riyadh.

The Chanel look brings those two periods of her career into conversation. A dress remembered from the Oscars has become the starting point for something new, worn by Dion as she creates another chapter on stage.
