The Spanish royal family has unveiled new official portraits of reigning monarchs Philip VI and his wife Letizia. Fans of the royal couple have already called the pictures ‘a work of art’, which is not surprising, because they were made by photographer Annie Leibovitz, who is known for her work with many world celebrities. The portraits of the King and Queen, taken nine months ago, were placed in the Bank of Spain.

‘Before completing the very important year 2024 for the royal family, the Bank of Spain would like to unveil the new portraits of Don Philip and Dona Letizia that already hang on its walls. Several impressive photographs taken in the royal palace by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz show the monarchs as we have never seen them before, in their most artistic and spectacular manifestations,’ the Bank said in a statement.

The two photographs of the king and queen are combined in a diptych, with each picture individually measuring 223.52 x 170.18cm. Both Philip and Laetitia posed for Leibovitz on 7 February 2024 in the Gasparini Palace Hall, which is open to the public with guided tours. According to official information, the filming took place from eleven in the morning to five in the evening, and for this time the visit was restricted.

It is noteworthy that the king and queen chose their own outfits for the photo shoot.
