David Beckham has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for 20 years. On 20 January, he received the Crystal Award for his work to improve the lives of young children. Speaking on stage at the 55th annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Monday, he recalled the first time he became involved with the King’s charity.
‘When the King asked me to be part of his foundation, I was very honoured. I immediately called my mum and she cried. I grew up in a family that adored and loved everything about the royal family. Our king is an incredible man. We have very similar interests, like beekeeping,’ Beckham joked.
The English football legend continued the thought by emphasising the importance of charity.
‘He’s into agriculture, I’m into agriculture. He’s into empowering young people, like me, so I’m very honoured,’ David concluded.
The World Economic Forum’s annual meeting brings together entrepreneurs, academics, business and political leaders. While accepting the award, David took the stage and gave a passionate speech about girls’ rights and the discrimination that society still has against women. He said he wished his daughter Harper, now 13, could have the same opportunities as her brothers.
