Ryan Gosling has undergone a radical physical change for his latest role in the upcoming science fiction film “Project ‘Ave Maria,” leaving fans struggling to recognize the actor in the newly released trailer. The preview, unveiled by Amazon MGM Studios earlier this week, showcases Gosling like never before.

Gone is his signature look of closely cropped hair and subtle stubble. Instead, Gosling appears as Ryland Grace, a teacher and molecular biologist, sporting long, wavy chestnut-brown hair and a thick, full beard. The trailer depicts the pivotal moment his character awakens from a coma to find himself adrift in space. This stark departure from his usual appearance has generated significant buzz and surprise among his fanbase.
The film adapts Andy Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name. It follows Grace, who is recruited for a critical mission: to discover why several stars, including Earth’s sun, are inexplicably fading. Described as a science fiction action thriller, “Project ‘Ave Maria” is scheduled for release on March 20, 2026.

Speaking at CinemaCon (as reported by Variety), Gosling expressed his enthusiasm for the ambitious project, in which he also serves as a producer alongside starring. “This is an insanely ambitious story of enormous scope and it seems really difficult to pull off, but that’s exactly why we need it,” Gosling stated. “That’s why we go to the movies. And I’m not just saying that because I’m in it. I’m saying that because I’m producing it.”
This dramatic hair transformation isn’t entirely new territory for Gosling. He famously underwent a complete physical overhaul for his role as Ken in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster “Barbie,” bleaching his hair platinum blonde to embody the iconic doll character. His commitment to physically embodying Ryland Grace for “Project ‘Ave Maria” signals another deep dive into character for the acclaimed actor.
