Prince Ludwig, the great grandson of the last King of Bavaria, and his wife Sophie-Alexandra Ewekink, who has Dutch and Canadian roots, have welcomed their firstborn baby boy. The couple, who wed in May 2023, announced the news publicly on social media. The monarchs named the newborn baby Ruprecht, presumably in honour of his great-great-grandfather, Crown Prince Ruprecht of Bavaria, the eldest heir to Ludwig III, the last king of Bavaria, who died in 1955.
“Princess Sophia and Prince Ludwig of Bavaria are delighted to announce the birth of their firstborn son. Prince Ruprecht Theodor Maria was born on 6 August 2024 in Munich. Mother and child are in good health, the young family is now enjoying their first days together,” reads the official statement.
In German, the name Ruprecht means “bright” or “famous”. Fans of the Bavarian monarchs rushed to leave their congratulations in the comments.
“Congratulations Prince Ludwig and Princess Sophie, welcome to this world, Prince Ruprecht.”
“Warmest congratulations and all the best to the baby and his parents.”
“Congratulations to the parents and the Wittelsbach house,” they wrote interchangeably.
Sophie revealed her pregnancy in March when she gave a lecture at the UN congress.
