There was a time when the Gulf was viewed mainly as a luxury market. Today, it is increasingly treated as a stage for luxury itself. That shift becomes especially clear when looking back at the major international fashion houses that have chosen the UAE for large-scale destination shows over the past two decades. From Roberto Cavalli and Chanel to Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior, and Giorgio Armani, these presentations helped redefine how the region is seen by the global fashion industry.

Roberto Cavalli

Roberto Cavalli was one of the earlier major fashion names to stage a runway show in the UAE. The first took place at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi in 2007 as part of the former Abu Dhabi Fashion Week. Rather than centering on a single seasonal collection, the show was conceived as a broader showcase for the Middle East, featuring Cavalli’s signature ready-to-wear looks and haute couture evening gowns. The house later returned to the UAE in September 2024, when Fausto Puglisi closed Dubai Fashion Week with a high-energy spring/summer 2025 presentation, reconnecting the brand with the region in a more contemporary format.

Chanel

Chanel has also staged two important shows in the UAE. The first came in May 2014, when the French house presented its Cruise 2014/15 collection in a custom-built pavilion on The Island, off Dubai’s Jumeirah coast. Under Karl Lagerfeld, the show became one of the defining early moments that helped place Dubai more firmly on the international fashion map. Chanel returned in November 2021, this time with a repeat presentation of its Cruise 2021/22 collection at Dubai Creek Harbour, under the creative direction of Virginie Viard. Together, both events reinforced the house’s long-term recognition of Dubai as a luxury audience worth addressing directly.

Dolce & Gabbana

For Dolce & Gabbana, the UAE became the setting for the brand’s first-ever show in both the country and the wider Middle East. Held on October 7, 2018, the event — titled Day & Night — took place in the Fashion Avenue extension of Dubai Mall and marked the opening of the house’s flagship boutique. More than 120 models walked in a presentation that included exclusive designs created for the occasion, from shimmering tailored pieces to embellished abayas and richly detailed kaftans. It was a show that clearly acknowledged the regional client, not simply as a customer, but as part of the visual and cultural conversation itself.

Christian Dior

In March 2019, Christian Dior made regional fashion history by bringing a reprise of its spring/summer 2019 haute couture collection to Safa Park in Dubai. Staged under a purpose-built circus tent, the show marked the first time a major fashion house presented a full haute couture show in the Middle East. Alongside the main collection, Dior also unveiled 15 exclusive designs created specifically for the region, making the event feel both globally significant and locally aware. In many ways, it was one of the clearest signs that the Middle East was no longer peripheral to the couture conversation.

Giorgio Armani

Giorgio Armani brought his much-anticipated One Night Only Dubai event to the city on October 26, 2021. Held at Armani Hotel Dubai beneath Burj Khalifa, the event was hosted by the designer himself and celebrated three milestones at once: the hotel’s 10th anniversary, the 40th anniversary of the Armani brand, and Expo 2020 Dubai. The showcase included more than 100 looks, spanning the Giorgio Armani spring/summer 2022 collection as well as exclusive Armani Privé haute couture creations. The evening also featured a live performance by Chris Martin, adding another level of spectacle to a show that was already highly symbolic for the brand’s relationship with Dubai.

Why it matters

What connects all of these moments is not only glamour or production value, but recognition. Relocating a runway show of this scale requires enormous planning, investment, and international coordination — from transporting collections and teams to building backstage infrastructure and flying in clients, press, and celebrities from around the world. These shows happen in the UAE because the region has become too important to ignore.

For WOW Magazine, the real takeaway is clear: the UAE is no longer simply attending the global fashion conversation from the front row. It is increasingly helping host it. And when houses like Chanel, Dior, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Cavalli, choose Dubai or Abu Dhabi as the setting for their vision, they are doing more than staging a show — they are acknowledging where luxury’s future audience already is.
